Odhikar is a leading Human Rights Organization in Bangladesh. In 1994, a group of Bangladeshi human rights activists feel the intensity to create a Human Rights Organization in Bangladesh so that they can uphold the civil, political, social, cultural and economic rights in Bangladesh. Subsequently, Odhikar was founded on 10 October 1994 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. On 25 March 1995, the Organization enrolled as a Human Rights NGO with the NGO Affairs Bureau of Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.
‘Odhikar’ is a bangle word, it means ‘rights.’ The Organization was founded with aim “to create a wider monitoring and awareness raising system on the abuse of civil and political rights.” Odhikar persists in to raise an effective voice against human rights violations in Bangladesh. Since 2003, Odhikar has been publishing an annual human rights monitoring report in Bangladesh.
In order to monitor human rights condition outside the capital city, Dhaka, Odhikar has trained more than 500 people and they are working in different areas of Bangladesh to collect information, promote human rights awareness, monitor different events, assist people regarding human rights matters and so on.
Odhikar has an Executive Committee consists of 5 members, among them, at present, Dr. C. R. Abrar, Professor of University of Dhaka, is the President, and Advocate Adilur Rahman Khan is the Secretary of Odhikar. The other three members of Odhikar are: Mr. Ruhul Amin Bhuiyan (function as Treasurer of Odhikar), Ms. Farida Akhter (Member), and Mr. J. Hasan (Member).
Currently, Odhikar has membership with the following International Organizations: International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), OMCT, AFAD, HURIDOCS, FORUM-ASIA, ANFREL, CICC, SDMA, and CIVICUS.
