Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA) is a non-profitable legal organization in Bangladesh promoting environmental justice, creating environmental awareness, and contributing towards the development of environmental jurisprudence. BELA was founded by Dr. Farooque along with a group of lawyers in 1992 to provide legal as well as other supports to protect the environment in the country. Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA) was registered as a society in 1992 and started its venture in 1993.
The Organization is always committed to protect the environment and defend environmental rights. BELA has published a number of books based on environmental protection, preservation and justice. It also organizes various training programs, seminars, workshops, and round table discussions regarding environmental issues and rights.
Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA) is a member of many international organizations such as Friends of the Earth International (FoEI), IUCN-the World Conservation Union, Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide, South Asia Watch on Trade, and Economics and Environment (SAWTEE).
BELA achieved “Global 500 Roll of Honour” from United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) in 2013. It was also awarded Bangladesh’s prestigious environmental award "Poribesh Puroshkar" in 2007. Moreover, the Chief Executive of BELA, advocate Ms. Rizwana Hasan, has received the Goldman Environment Award (2009) and Ramon Magsaysay Award (2012).
