Bangladesh Forest Research Institute (BFRI), formerly known as East Pakistan Forest Research Laboratory (EPFRL), is the national forestry research institute of Bangladesh. BFRI was established in 1955. The Institute is located at Sholashahar in Chittagong, Bangladesh. It runs under the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MOEF), Government of Bangladesh. Bangladesh Forest Research Institute is highly responsible to maintain and develop forest areas of Bangladesh. It conducts forest management and forest utilization research to reserve & create new forest areas in the country.
BFRI has two research branches – Forest Management Branch, and Forest Products Branch. The Forest Management Branch comprises eleven (11) research divisions – Silvicultural Research, Silviculture Genetics, Seed Orchard, Mangrove Silviculture, Plantation Trial Unit, Minor Forest Products, Forest Botany, Forest Economics & Statistics, Forest Inventory, Soil Science, and Forest Protection – and the Forest Products Branch has six (6) research divisions – Wood Working & Timber Engineering, Seasoning & Timber Physics, Veneer & Composite Wood Products, Wood Preservation, Pulp and Paper, and Forest Chemistry. The Institute has close collaboration with many national and international forestry research organizations and networks.
