Bangladesh Institute of Research and Training on Applied Nutrition (BIRTAN) is an institute under the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, working to eliminate the nutritional problems and improve the public-health of the country through conducting research, providing training, organizing symposia and workshops, and promoting other related activities.
The Institute was formerly known as Applied Nutrition Project (ANP) until 1979, and renamed Bangladesh Applied Nutrition and Human Resource Development Board (BANHRDB) in 2000. BANHRDB finally renamed as Bangladesh Institute of Research and Training on Applied Nutrition (BIRTAN), and came into existence on 19 June, 2012.
Though, BIRTAN has been working since 1968 to improve the nutritional status of the nation, the Bangladesh Institute of Research and Training on Applied Nutrition (BIRTAN) Act 2012 (Act No. XVIII of 2012) was enacted in 2012. The Institute is run by a Board of Management headed by a Chairman. The Chairman is the Honorable Minister, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of Bangladesh.
